Everything You Wanted To Know about OIL Day But Didn't Know to Ask

If you’re not exactly sure what Oil Day is, you’re not alone. Our friends over at Grassroots are here to help...

July 10 = 7/10, and 710 = OIL if you turn it upside down.

In terms of cannabis-inspired holidays, many consider 7/10 the sister celebration to 4/20.
Oil Day is a day for appreciating cannabis in its concentrated form.

When we speak about “concentrates,” it’s important to know that this pertains to any extraction of concentrated cannabis oil, regardless of its finished appearance. Thanks to a full,  concentrated  terpene and cannabinoid profile, concentrates are significantly more potent and flavorful than cannabis flower alone, that being just one of many reasons to love concentrates.

Reasons to love concentrates.

Maximum potency

Hey, they’re called “concentrates” for a reason. Experience a higher potency of cannabinoids and terpenes vs. other products.

Small but mighty

Due to their concentrated formulas, even a small amount is significantly more potent than flower.

Finest of flavor

Rich in tasty terpenes, concentrates carry the delicious flavor and aroma of the source plant.

Fast-acting

The onset of effects is almost immediate due to the body's easy absorption of the activated high concentration of compounds like cannabinoids and terpenes.

Premium purity

Our rigorous testing standards, pristine facilities, and innovative extraction processes all help ensure the maximum amount of residual solvents and impurities are removed for a purely potent and safe product.

Method of Extraction

Most concentrates are created by passing a solvent through cannabis plant material. Examples include Shatter, Crumble, Badder, Distillate, and Sugar Wax.

Others are produced through a solventless extraction process that utilizes mechanical techniques like pressure, temperature, and filtration. Examples include Live Rosin and Bubble Hash.

“Cured” vs. “Live”

“Cured” concentrates are produced from cannabis plant material that has gone through the drying and curing process. “Live” concentrates are made from flash-frozen cannabis, starting material that has not been dried or cured.

Flash-freezing is how we best preserve the concentrate’s naturally occurring cannabinoids and high terpene content. This results in a truer representation of a strain’s characteristic flavors and effects, thus setting “live” concentrates apart from the rest of the cannabis concentrate world.

Consistency

A concentrate’s consistency can range from liquid to solid to anywhere in between. Oftentimes, concentrates are named for their consistency.

For example, a concentrate like Budder or Badder typically has a soft texture with a creamy, whipped consistency that tends to resemble butter or cake batter, respectively. Concentrates that are easy to break apart between your fingers—like a cookie—are known as Crumble. Shatter has a beautiful amber or golden color and a texture that is either taffy-like that will pull and snap, or glass-like that can break and shatter—hence the name.

Oil Day is also known as Dab Day.

Many cannabis concentrates, like those listed above, are administered through dabbing. This is why some people alternately refer to 7/10 as “Dab Day.”

To add to the versatility of concentrates, there are also a number of ways to consume them. While vaporization is most popular, it’s certainly not the only way to get a great experience.

To dab, you need to heat a cannabis concentrate to vaporize it. The resulting vapor is inhaled, most often through a dab rig.

There are two main kinds of dab rigs: glass and electronic. Dab rigs are a water pipe featuring a “nail” or “banger,” which is heated to vaporize the concentrate. Vapor then flows down into the rig and through the water, cooling and filtering it before inhalation.

If just starting to dabble or looking for a more discreet option, dab pens can be a great choice. Portable dab pens have the benefits of traditional dabbing with the convenience of portability. The concentrate goes into a chamber on your portable dab pen/vaporizer, after which it’s heated and vaporized for consumption. These pens are a great option for those on the go, beginners, and people looking for a more cost-effective consumption method without the need for different hardware pieces.

With flower

Many concentrates can be added right to your favorite flower, such as Crumble, Bubble Hash, Wax, or Diamonds. This can be a great option if you don’t have the equipment to dab, or just want an added kick of potency. Try adding throughout a joint, topping your bowl, or packing on your bong.

Vape pens

Vape pens allow for an easy and convenient way for people to consume cannabis concentrates. Vape pens use hardware to enable vaporization of the oil, which is inhaled via a mouthpiece. Vape pens can be filled with a variety of concentrate types from distillate, to live resin, to rosin. Most vape pen cartridges are size 510 threaded and fit with a variety of batteries, but some cartridge hardware are pods that require specific types of batteries.

While dabbing does mean that you can enjoy (much) higher percentages of cannabinoids—like THC—it doesn’t equate to recklessness like the stigmas suggest. A fast-acting and highly potent dose means swift, effective relief for patients who need it and an especially elevated experience for those who recreate responsibly.

Concentrates are a great option for consumers who may have a high tolerance or have built up a tolerance from consuming other products like flower. The potency of concentrates allows consumers to experience effects that are more intense than consuming flower or lower-potency products. A little goes a long way.

When consuming concentrates, you are inhaling the concentrated compounds from cannabis without the plant material, so you’re just inhaling the therapeutic compounds like cannabinoids and terpenes. Given the concentrated amount of compounds, a little goes a long way, and you can experience much more flavor due to the concentration of terpenes.

While Dab Day is a lovely alliteration, “Oil Day” is inclusive of all concentrates—and the numerous ways to enjoy them.

With a variety of formats and consumption methods, concentrates are all about experimenting and exploring until you find a combination you love. And we love helping you find it.

Now that you have an idea of what’s on the table, the next step is figuring out where to start. When choosing which concentrate is right for you, we like to consider a few different things:

  • Consumption method preference and hardware Be sure to consider your preferred consumption method based on the hardware you have available to you to make sure you purchase the proper concentrate consistency for optimal intake, effects, and experiences. For the most optimal dabbing experience, we recommend using a dab rig. If just starting to dabble or looking for a more discreet option, dab pens or vapes can be a great choice.

  • Cultivar Each of our concentrates is strain-specific with different terpene and cannabinoid profiles that produce unique flavors, aromas, and effects. If you have certain strains you like or effects you’re seeking, be sure to ask your budtender for guidance on which concentrate will reflect that experience.

  • Live vs. cured If you’re seeking the tastiest terps, live tends to provide that extra punch of flavor. If you’re seeking potency with value, cured can be a great option with a typically lower price point.

  • Availability Product availability will vary market by market, so check out what’s available to you on our site https://curaleaf.com/locations or at your local dispensary. And hey, concentrates are a great opportunity to discover new cultivars.
