Get to Know Our Recycling and Reforestation Partners

This Earth Day, we’re celebrating the only planet with cannabis by highlighting our partners who are helping us eliminate waste and offset our emissions. Resinate and TerraCycle® are our recycling partners, helping us offer greener grass at Curaleaf dispensaries across Arizona and New York. Flash Forest is our reforestation partner who helps us give back to Mother Earth by planting thousands of trees with the power of tech. Take a minute and learn how Curaleaf is getting green with a little help from our friends.

Resinate is turning one man’s trash into another man’s rolling tray

Resinate started in 2018 as a grassroots startup project by Garret Schwartz. The goal was to recycle the items that fall through the cracks of Phoenix’s city recycling—the ones that are too small or difficult for the city to recycle. He partnered with his brother, Brandon Schwartz, and they built Resinate into an innovative system that helps dispensaries recycle glass flower jars, paper, metal tins, and previously unrecyclable items like plastic joint tubes and more. They then process the plastic collected into something much cooler, their ingenious Twisted Tray, which will have you rolling j’s that make Snoop jealous.

*Can you believe this is made from 100% recycled dispensary plastic?*

Resinate also has a solution for one of the biggest problems with recycling: getting people to actually do it. To solve for that, they put tech-equipped recycling bins in each of their partner’s dispensaries. The bin instructs customers to scan a QR code to opt into rewards and then put their waste inside of a sci-fi glowing tube on the bin. Curaleaf rewards the customers with product discounts, freebies, and more, and Resinate uses IoT technology to coordinate pickups as the bin fills up over time.
*Recycling has never been so cool.*

Curaleaf proudly partners with Resinate at every one of our AZ locations. Since their start, Resinate has diverted 28,050 lbs of waste from landfills!

TerraCycle® is giving New York dispensaries new ways to recycle

TerraCycle is an international leader in innovative sustainability solutions and a leader in recycling items that curbside and municipal services won’t touch. As a dispensary, we have uniquely complex waste challenges, with child-proof plastic containers, flexible plastic film packaging, products with customer information, and state laws that require all cannabis-related materials be recycled within the state. Our partnership with TerraCycle across our New York dispensaries allows us to recycle all of that waste legally and responsibly.

At our New York locations, we’ll have TerraCycle boxes, where customers can bring in their dispensary waste for proper recycling. We hope to offer rewards and incentives for recycling in the future as well. This is a new program, so be on the lookout for TerraCycle boxes showing up at your local NY Curaleaf shop.

*The TerraCycle dedication to eliminating waste knows no bounds, as demonstrated by the TerraCycle Global Foundation crew.*

TerraCycle has recycled over 8,316,308,274 items (and counting!) across their 20 years of operation in 21 countries with 40,000 clients globally.

Flash Forest is helping us make sure the future gets big rips of clean air.

*Meet Flash Forest’s innovative new take on Johnny Appleseed: drones.*

We’re not making our partners do all the work. From April 22nd through May 6th, we’re encouraging our team members to beautify their own communities. We’re then multiplying that effort by having Flash Forest plant a tree in the Assinca National Forest outside of Quebec, Canada, for every hour volunteered. Flash Forest is an aerial reforestation company that uses advanced technology to scale reforestation at the rate the climate crisis demands. With the help of drones, they’re able to drop their ingenious regrowth areas, jumpstarting seedling growth and dramatically increasing the success rate of tree seedlings.

This isn’t the first time we’ve partnered with Flash Forest. We have planted 30,000 trees so far through our partnership with them. Those trees will restore 50 acres of land over their lifetime and sequester 12,000 tonnes of carbon from the atmosphere. So we can all look forward to taking big hits of clean air in the future.

We hope the efforts of these awesome partners inspire you to give back in your own way today, and every day.

Happy Earth Day!
